Students from Hugh Baird College’s L20 Hotel School had the experience of a lifetime recently when they worked alongside professional wine sommeliers at the recent Bordeaux Wine Festival in Liverpool.
Bordeaux’s finest export came to Liverpool’s UNESCO World Heritage waterfront during the Three Festival’s Tall Ships Regatta last month. A UK first; Liverpool was embraced into the Bordeaux ‘Fete le Vin’ family alongside Brussels, Hong Kong and Quebec.
Working under the guidance of Bordeaux Wines UK wine sommeliers, the students from the College’s Hospitality & Catering department served wine to festival attendees in the Wine School marquee.
L20 Hotel School student Duncan Campbell from Aigburth said:
“We learnt so much about pairing wines with fine dining food and the history of wine in the Bordeaux region.”
“Following the festival, we received a letter from the Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, thanking us for volunteering, which will look really impressive on my CV when I come to apply for jobs in the industry.”
Stephen Otty, Curriculum Coordinator at the L20 Hotel School said:
“To have the chance to work alongside professional wine sommeliers is a truly unique experience. When Culture Liverpool and Bordeaux Wines UK asked for volunteers to help out at the Wine School, we jumped at the chance, knowing that the festival coming to the UK and Liverpool was an extraordinary opportunity for our students.”
